Tip에 대한 영어 표현 정리

Tip은 많이 쓰이는 영어단어죠. 유용한 정보, 식당에서 종업원에게 주는 팁 등의 뜻을 가지고 있는데요. 그 외에 Tip 은 영어 회화에 있어 정말 많은 관용구로 활용되고 있습니다. 이렇게 사용된 관용구에 대해 미리 알지 못하면 그 뜻을 유추하기 어려운 경우가 많죠. 이번 포스팅에서는 영어 단어 Tip에 대해 engVid 제임스 선생님의 강의를 통해 정리해봤습니다. 

Tip의 기본적인 뜻

1. gift of money for service (식당 등에서의 팁)

2. pointed end of something (무언가의 끝부분)

그 밖의 Tip의 뜻

1. Information to help

ex. useful tips for buying a computer 컴퓨터 구입에 유용한 정보

2. make fall over

ex. The boat tipped to one side. 보트가 한 쪽으로 기울었다.

3. a small part of something larger

ex. Tip of the iceberg 빙산의 일각

4. tip one's hand (tell a secret)

ex. I won't never tip my hand to anybody. 나는 절대로 누군가에게 비밀을 말하지 않을 것이다.

5. tip the scales (to have specific weight)

ex. He tipped the scales at just over 80 kilos. 그의 체중이 80킬로를 약간 넘게 나갔다.

6. tip of the tongue (ready to speak but can't remember)

ex. Her name is on the tip of my tongue. 그녀의 이름이 기억 날 듯 말 듯하다.

7. tip one's hat ( greeting or show of respect)

ex. He tips his hat. 그는 그의 모자를 만지며 인사했다.

8. anonymous tip (information given to police to catch criminals)

Three men were arrested after police were tipped off about the raid. 경찰이 그 습격 사건에 대한 제보를 받은 뒤 세 남자가 체포되었다.

9. tip the balance (a charge that make something more likely to happen)

In an interview, smart presentation can tip the scales in your favor. 면접 때 똑똑하게 발표하면 당신에게 유리하게 국면을 전환시킬 수 있다.
